Are you struggling with overwhelm, consistency, focus, self doubt and emotional intensity?

You’re not alone.

ADHD affects up to 5% of people. That’s a lot of us. And it’s often not obvious.

Many adults with ADHD are often outwardly successful. But the effort it takes to healthily live and be productive is hidden.

Over time, coping mechanisms relied on to function become less effective as professional and personal responsibilities escalate, and the demands of stress and even biological changes (especially in women) intensify symptoms and ability to self manage. Masking - which refers to hiding our challenges and surpressing our natural tendencies - also contributes to overwhelm and burnout.

At The Adhdvantage, we understand what it’s like to adult with ADHD from lived experience.

We’re also specialists in working with adults with ADHD.

THIS IS CLASSIC ADHD

  • You have moments and phases of brilliance, but not consistently, and this is often followed by deep seated self doubt

  • You know you’re capable of more but can’t quite reach that place and have feelings of disappointment, incompetence, and diminishing self trust

  • You experience irregular bursts of energy - you’re either all in/on, or off - leading to spurts of productivity, particularly when highly engaged, but followed by exhaustion

  • You experience strong emotions which can be overwhelming, and you can’t rely on yourself to stay calm, say the right thing at the right time, and not overact

  • You’re frustrated at a lack of ability to direct your attention to the right thing at the right time

  • You’re tired of relying on stress and urgency to get things done. You know it’s not sustainable, and that there’s a price to pay for yourself, and others around you.

But the fact is, the ADHD person has exceptional  abilities

Depending on the conditions, the ADHD person has an exceptional capacity for creativity, connection, ideation and speedy output. Not to mention heightened intuition, empathic qualities, and a strong social justice beacon.

These strengths are contrasted by significant corresponding challenges, many of which are “executive functions” (self management skills).

We know that all people have variable skills and abilities as well as challenges. However in neurodivergent people, this variation is more pronounced. The challenges can be and feel quite dis-abling, and a source of shame and embarrassment.

These differences have been translated and framed as a “spiky profile” (see post on the Resources page). The spiky profile is more nuanced and inclusive than other capability frameworks.

Knowing our strengths as people with ADHD is paramount for two main reasons. First, because executive functioning difficulties are more pronounced for us than for neurotypicals, and second, we are extra prone to negative self appraisal.

Who we are

As late diagnosed counsellors and coaches with ADHD, we’ve identified a need for professional development for people with ADHD - especially in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Working with adults with ADHD, we know that educated, structured support in a shame-free environment, is a critical part of accepting, appreciating and applying our differences as neuro-gifted people in our work and lives.

“People with ADHD have a special ‘feel’ for life, a way of seeing right into the heart of matters, while others have to reason their way methodically.”

— Dr Ned Hallowell
